The BMW Group has started production of its BMW iX5 Hydrogen model. For now it will be a small series of vehicles that is being carried out in the pilot plant of its Munich Research and Innovation Center (FIZ).
The model with hydrogen fuel cell technology it has already completed an intensive program of tests during the development phase, and now, already as a production modelwill be used as a technology demonstrator from the first half of 2023.
“Hydrogen is a versatile energy source that has a key role in moving towards climate neutrality. We are confident that hydrogen is going to gain a lot of importance for individual mobility and therefore we consider that a mix of propulsion systems power with batteries and fuel cells is a sensible approach in the long term.Fuel cells also do not require critical raw materials such as cobalt, lithium or nickel, so by investing in these types of propulsion systems we are also reinforcing the geopolitical resistance of the BMW Group”says Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Development.
The plant in Spartanburg ( United States) supplies the base vehicles for the hydrogen model, which has been developed on the platform of the BMW X5. In the body shop they have been equipped with a new floor that allows the two hydrogen tanks to be housed in the central tunnel and under the rear seats. Model-specific 12V and 400V electrical systems, high-performance battery, the electric motor and the fuel cell are integrated during the assembly phase in Munich.
The BMW IX5 Hydrogen uses the same fifth-generation BMW EDRive engine as all electric models of the brandwhich is powered by electrical energy from fuel cells and a storage battery.
Hydrogen is stored in two 700 bar tanks made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP).. The fuel cell converts hydrogen into electrical energy, generating 170 Hp of power. In addition, the electric motor can use energy stored in a battery, which is charged through energy recovery or from the fuel cell.
In total, the system offers 275 kW / 374 Hp of power.
