Positive Turnaround as Stellantis and UAW Reach New Agreement

In a recent development, Stellantis made the decision to reopen its assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, which had been idle since the end of February. The temporary closure had resulted in the laying off of 1,200 employees, leaving them uncertain about their future job prospects. However, thanks to a new tentative agreement between Stellantis and the United Auto Workers (UAW), the situation has taken a positive turn.

UAW's Vice President Rich Boyer expressed his joy in an official statement shared on YouTube, stating, "UAW family, it is... my great honor to announce that we have saved Belvidere. Again, we have saved Belvidere... We have won a new vehicle at Belvidere... it will be a midsize truck, and we will have two shifts."

Even before resuming production at the plant, the laid-off workers will receive benefits and be placed on temporary layoff with compensation and healthcare coverage until they can return to their jobs. Furthermore, Stellantis has exciting plans to create over 1,000 new jobs by establishing a battery plant in Belvidere.

Mystery Surrounding the Nature of the Midsize Truck

While the reopening of the Belvidere factory is undoubtedly welcome news, the exact details of the midsize truck that Stellantis will manufacture remain unclear. One possibility that comes to mind is the Ram Rampage, currently being produced in Brazil at a factory in Pernambuco and undergoing extensive testing in the United States. However, the Rampage is categorized as a compact truck, similar in size to the Ford Maverick.

Considering the UAW Vice President's mention of the midsize truck along with the battery plant, it is reasonable to speculate that the upcoming pickup could also be available as a hybrid and/or electric vehicle (EV). In this case, it is conceivable that the truck may utilize the STLA Large platform, suggesting a unibody construction, while the larger Ram 1500 REV adopts the STLA Frame.

The STLA Large platform, one of the electric-centric platforms developed by Stellantis, will serve as the foundation for vehicles varying in length from 185 to 212.6 inches. The battery capacity is expected to range from 101 to 118 kWh, offering an impressive range of up to 500 miles on a single charge.

Regardless of the specific details, the midsize truck will offer a gasoline engine option. UAW President Shawn Fain affirmed this by stating, "We are bringing both combustion vehicle and battery jobs to Belvidere."
