An Innovative Solution to Reduce Waste

Imagine a world where nothing ends up in landfill, where everything can be reused, recycled, and repurposed, creating products that never reach their "end of life." This vision is becoming a reality through the revolutionary work of Italian design company Krill Design. Founded in 2018 by three architects, Krill is transforming food waste into furniture products made from a patented, fully organic, and biodegradable biomaterial named Rekrill.

The Process: From Waste to Functional Furniture

Krill's unique manufacturing process involves a four-step transformation of food waste into functional furniture pieces. Firstly, food waste such as fruit peels, orange seeds, and coffee grounds collected from businesses in Italy is dried and crushed into a fine powder. This powder is then combined with a biodegradable plastic alternative known as polyhydroxybutyrat (PHB), with the addition of fruit waste enhancing the rigidity of the material. The resulting compound is transformed into a filament, which is then utilized in 3D printing to create furniture items like bookends, stools, clocks, bowls, and their renowned Ohmie lamp. According to Krill, the Ohmie lamp takes approximately three hours to complete, but printing times may vary depending on the specific product. By printing their products hollow, Krill reduces both the cost and time required for printing, making their sustainable furniture more accessible.

Collaborations and Sustainable Partnerships

Krill Design has established collaborations with renowned brands such as Sanpellegrino and Four Seasons hotel chain. Through these partnerships, Krill has created innovative designs including a drinks tray, a glacette, and even a table lamp made from waste sourced from Sicilian oranges. By utilizing food waste materials and working with these established brands, Krill strives to contribute to a circular economy, where materials are continually reused and recycled.

A Material for the Future

Krill's biomaterial, Rekrill, offers numerous environmental benefits. Besides being fully organic and biodegradable, Rekrill can be repeatedly utilized without losing its integrity. When it eventually breaks down, it poses no harm to the environment and can even be safely consumed by marine life. However, producing Rekrill remains costly and challenging due to the intricate manufacturing process, making it more expensive than common plastics. Despite the higher cost, Krill believes that embracing sustainable materials is crucial to combatting the detrimental effects of unsustainable plastics. As more companies and consumers recognize the importance of reducing waste, Krill is optimistic that the adoption of Rekrill and similar materials will become more widespread, leading to a greener and more sustainable future.

Looking Ahead

Krill Design continues to experiment with various food waste materials, exploring options such as eggshells, tomatoes, and grape leftovers from winemaking. Additionally, they are constantly striving to enhance their production process, aiming for improved efficiency, reduced costs, and increased eco-friendliness. Krill also plans to offer the Rekrill filament for sale, enabling individuals and businesses to create their own sustainable products using 3D printers. In the future, they also aspire to develop injection molding techniques, which could further streamline their manufacturing process. As the world moves towards a more circular economy, where waste is minimized and eco-friendly materials become the norm, Krill Design stands at the forefront of sustainable innovation. With their commitment to transforming food waste into functional and beautiful furniture pieces, Krill is paving the way towards a greener, more sustainable future.
